iOS 6

Last night (IST), Apple unveiled the iOS 6 at WWDC’s 23rd event. And there are many more noticeable features and upgrades to iOS 5. When compared to iOS 5, iOS 6 features more than 200 features and upgrades. So lets see what’s new in iOS 6.

Maps

The most talked and most rumored  feature of iOS 6, Apple has completely ditched Google Maps. Its their own mapping app and integrated it with yelp.

Siri

  • Now Siri will be available on the new iPad.
  • It can now launch apps.
  • Siri has turned smarter now. Can tell you scores, match summaries, etc.
  • Now Siri can tweet.

Facebook integration

This was really needed for iOS users. Earlier Apple considered twitter integration only, now they have deeply integrated Facebook (as twitter).

Safari

A few minor updates to Safari include Offline reading, photo upload, add app banners to a website.

Photos

Photos have not been revamped but got a little update like photos can now be shared with friends on iCloud.

Passbook

When I first heard of this I thought Apple is coming up with an app which can store important data like passwords, etc. just like Blackberry Password manager but no, Its different and just like Google wallet.

Mail

They have introduced a new feature called VIP which can highlight mail from the people who are important to you or the priority ones. Its native mail client can now open password protected mail and pull to refresh messages.

Facetime

Now you can video call on Facetime over your 3G network. Thats it.

Other Features

There is one new feature to iOS 6, “Do not disturb” That means your phone will receive messages but won’t notify you. Added “remind me later” and “text back later” when you receive any call in case you are busy or not in a mood to receive calls.

When is iOS 6 coming?

Coming soon right after iPhone 5 launch.

Which devices are supported for iOS 6?

iPhone 3GS (namesake), iPhone 4 and 4S, iPad 2 and new iPad.
